Has your roof seen better days? If you’ve noticed that your roof isn’t looking as good as it did and you’re ready for a new one, you might be happy to know that you have plenty of options beyond the traditional asphalt shingles.
Today, roof replacement in the greater Chicagoland area is as much about style as it is about function. At Erdmann Exteriors & Construction, we draw on more than 30 years of experience to help you choose the right roof to match your home’s style, your own personal maintenance requirements and your budget.
Roof Replacement Is an Opportunity to Shine
For many homeowners, replacing their roofs is simple. They go with what they’ve always had — an asphalt shingle in the same color that the home has had for the last 20 years. But other homeowners see a roof installation as a chance to add a little something extra to their homes. After all, in some cases, the roof is the most prominent feature of the home. You want it to look good and enhance your home’s appearance.
Once you decide to invest in roof replacement, you naturally wonder what type or color of roofing material will look best on your home. That’s where Erdmann comes in. Our design team members, who are experts on roof installation, take into account things such as:
Longevity. How long will the roof last?
Durability. Is it suitable for our local climate?
Weight. Can the existing roof framing support the weight of the material?
Slope. What is the slope of your roof? Some materials work better on steep slopes, while others perform better with gentle slopes.
Style. How will the roof look? Will it complement and enhance the style of your home?
Materials. What are the materials made of? How eco-friendly are they? Can they be recycled?
Cost. What are the cost considerations for each type of roof installation?
Different Types of Roofs
Each roofing material has its own special characteristics. Together, you and your Erdmann roofer determine what material is right for your home. The possibilities include:
Asphalt Shingles These are the shingles you likely had on your childhood home and, if you’re like 80 percent of the country’s homeowners, you probably have these on your home right now. Made from paper mat or fiberglass and infused with asphalt, these shingles have a grainy texture when touched. At Erdmann, we are proud to install CertainTeed shingles, which are prized for their quality, durability, performance and aesthetics.
Metal Roofing These aren’t the old, flat, tinned roofs of the past. Today’s metal roofs are attractive, energy-efficient and lightweight. They may be made from steel, aluminum, copper or zinc alloy. They come in shingles or sheets that feature standing seams, which offer an added layer of protection against moisture.
Cedar Shingles Cedar shingles and shakes provide a classic wood look to the roof. Cedar is naturally mold-, mildew- and insect-resistant, but has a low fire tolerance unless it is treated. Cedar shingles can be left to weather naturally or they can be painted. Cedar requires more maintenance than any other type of roofing material, but it makes up for it in looks.
Slate Roofing One of the oldest roofing materials, slate remains popular for good reason. It is extremely durable and wind- and fire-resistant. This 100 percent natural material is very heavy and usually requires roof reinforcement. Slate roofing is best for steep-sloped roofs.
Tile Heavy, long-lasting and low-maintenance, tiles are made from clay or concrete. They provide excellent fire resistance and can be made to resemble traditional clay tiles, wood shakes or slate.
